Net Neutrality on the web
Net neutrality has long been a topic of discussion for people in and around the technological forefront. But now rumors are forming around Google and Verizon's newly proposed legislative framework. The purpose of net neutrality is to ensure that service provider giants like Google cannot provide an unfair advantage for larger companies, like Verizon, by providing more bandwidth, top search results etc. This compromise ensure that smaller start-up businesses have an equal opportunity to become established and promote themselves.
For now the internet is an equal playing field, and service providers cannot discriminate between their customers, by limiting which services they receive, how much bandwidth they're allowed, and what types of content they can upload. The fact that the internet is equal as of now ensures that small companies can grow very quickly and even to the level of challenging larger participants. Without net neutrality, the larger companies with the bigger budgets could slowly wedge out the smaller competitions by restricting them from the same opportunities.
Access providers have long known about net neutrality and how to play the game. They look to government to regulate net usage in their favor, buying up smaller companies or eliminating their competition altogether.
In a proposal from Google and Verizon, the two corporate giants leave much to be desired in the area of mobile web usage, while the remainder of the legislation is complex and not easily enforced. This means start-up companies will have trouble finding financing and building a business of worth. If this legislation discriminates against smaller companies either directly or indirectly it can be difficult for them to receive funding or support for their ideas and products. With big companies like Google and Verizon looking to protect their own personal investments and to eliminate and possible threat, its not surprising we are hearing such an out cry from the voices of smaller and start-up business everywhere.
